The number you are actually aiming for
“Enough” is not a feeling, it is an arithmetic result. Work out what yours is, see the stages between here and there, and watch what changes when you move one lever.
The core arithmetic
The Rule of 25 says a portfolio of 25× your annual spending can, on historical assumptions, sustain that spending indefinitely. It is the same statement as the 4% rule — withdraw 4% a year and the remainder is expected to keep growing.
Two things follow, and the second is the one people miss. Investing more brings the date closer. But spending less permanently brings it closer twice over: it raises what you invest and lowers the target at the same time.
Both rules come from studies of historical US market data over specific periods. They are a planning starting point, not a guarantee, and they say nothing about the order in which returns arrive.
What redirecting spending does
One hypothetical household earning ₹65,000 a month. Move the slider to send more of it into investing instead.
- Monthly spending
- ₹30,000
- Monthly investing
- ₹20,000
- Target corpus
- ₹90.0 L
Illustration, not a forecast or personal advice. Starting from zero, investing every month without interruption at an assumed 12% p.a. nominal return, targeting 25× annual expenses (the 4% withdrawal rule). Real returns vary year to year, can be negative, and arrive unevenly. Inflation and tax are not modelled.
The eight-stage ladder
Most people are somewhere on this ladder rather than at one end of it. The stages run in order because each one makes the next survivable.
- 01
Clarity and Budget
Track every rupee, stop leaking cash into forgotten subscriptions, and uncover exact monthly living baseline requirements.
- 02
Debt Freedom
Eliminate predatory high-interest liabilities: credit card rolls, BNPL loans, and consumer EMIs eating into real income velocity.
- 03
Stability Buffer
3-6 months liquid emergency fund stored securely in high-yield liquid mutual funds or multi-bank sweep deposits.
- 04
Security and Defense
Adequate pure Term Life (15-20x income) & Comprehensive Health Insurance shielding portfolio from catastrophic drawdowns.
- 05
Systematic Wealth
Consistently investing ≥25% of net income into index funds, flexi-caps, and provident accounts on autopilot every single month.
- 06
Halfway Milestone
The portfolio crosses the tipping point: dividends and conservative gains produce 50% of your annual living expenses effortlessly.
- 07
Financial Independence
The classic FI point: The 4% safe withdrawal rule or 25x annual basic expenses accumulated. Working is now 100% voluntary.
- 08
Abundance and Freedom
Complete serenity, philanthropic capabilities, multi-generational wealth preservation, and pursuing passions on your own calendar.
